On Friday, I went to a litterary conference and I discovered Marie Charrel. This woman is quite a successful author (she has won prices for her work) and is also an economic jounalist at the very popular French newpaper Le Monde. Two books were presented : Les Mangeurs de nuit and La fille de Lake Acid. This article will be about les Mangeurs de nuit that I just red .
Things I learned during the conference (In French and then in English)
Quelques éléments que j’ai appris durant la conférence (avant de lire le livre) :
- Dans le livre, il y a de nombreuses descriptions en rapport avec la forêt. Le personnage de Jack est à l’écoute de cet environnement : il sent et entend de nombreuses choses (bruits de végétaux ou d’animaux, changements d’énergie même). La forêt primaire est un personnage à part entière.
- En Colombie-Britannique, les forêts dépendent du saumon.
- Les ours bruns peuvent devenir blancs par mutation génétique.
- Lors de l’immigration japonaise, il existait des « picture brides ». ces femmes étaient choisies sur photos par leurs futurs maris qui habitaient au Canada (et étaient beaucoup moins riches et beaux qu’en réalité!).
- Le personnage de Kiyoko est inspiré d’une histoire vraie : une picture bride arrivée en Colombie-Brittanique qui devient tenancière de maison close à Vancouver.
A few things I learned during the conference (before I read the the book):
- In the book, there are numerous descriptions related to the forest. The character of Jack is attuned to this environment: he senses and hears many things (sounds of plants or animals, even changes in energy). The primary forest is a character in its own right. In British Columbia, forests rely on salmon.
- Brown bears can turn white due to genetic mutation.
- During Japanese immigration, there were « picture brides ». These women were chosen from photos by their prospective husbands who lived in Canada (and were much less wealthy and attractive than in reality!).
- The character of Kiyoko is inspired by a true story: a picture bride who arrived in British Columbia and became a madam in a brothel in Vancouver.

Les Mangeurs de Nuit de Marie Charrel a été publié en 2023.L’histoire se déroule des années 20 jusqu’à l’après-guerre en Colombie britannique.
Il raconte l’histoire d’Hannah, une Nisei (fille d’immigrés japonais). Bercée par les histoires paternels, elle fréquente ensuite une école de Vancouver où elle est allée vivre avec sa mère après la mort de son père. Mais le racisme anti-japonais est bien présent et l’arrivée de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale empire les choses. Elle est contrainte de fuir avec sa famille et doit affronter de nombreuses épreuves.
En parallèle, le lecteur découvre le personnage de Jack. Jack est creekwalker au coeur de la forêt de Colombie-Britannique. Il compte les différentes espèces de poissons pour que des quotas de pêche soient élaborés en fonction de ça.
Leurs chemins se croisent lorsqu’Hannah est attaquée par un ours blanc, un Moksgm’ol dans le langage amérindien. Elle développe alors des dons de perception extraordinaires.
Les mangeurs de nuit (« The Night Eaters ») by Marie Charrel was published in 2023. The story unfolds from the 1920s to the post-war period in British Columbia.
It tells the story of Hannah, a Nisei (daughter of Japanese immigrants). Nurtured by her father’s stories, she later attends a school in Vancouver where she moved with her mother after her father’s death. But she has to face anti-Japanese racism and World war II is coming aggravating the situation. She is forced to flee with her family and has to face numerous trials.
At the same time, the reader is introduced to the character of Jack. Jack is a creekwalker in the heart of the British Columbia forest. He counts the different fish species so that fishing quotas can be determined according to its work.
Their paths cross when Hannah is attacked by a white bear, a Moksgm’ol in the Indigenous langage. She then develops extraordinary perception abilities.
If you want to read the book in French yourself, just be conscious that it is for very adanced learners.
